Snow!

Lots of great pix from today with so many new things going on!

Since February is the month of Love, the kids colored in some accordion-fold lettered Love cards to keep or give away.

Thanks to Grandma Chase, Declan and Livi have Diego’s “Rescue Pack” and Dora’s “Backpack” to play with. They went crazy with these packs! As usual, they acted out Diego and his sister Alicia playing animal rescuers, using the transportation form of jumping on chairs. “There’s an animal in trouble! We must resuce him/her!” Every time I accidentally call Declan by his real name, which is pretty much all the time, Livi corrects me and says “That’s *Diego!*” Declan loves that.

We also recently acquired some board games. Now that Declan is 3, there are so many cool things we can play together. Livi kicked our butts at Candyland, THEN she won at Chutes and Ladders, but I won the second round, then we played a bit of Boggle Junior, which after a few minutes the kids said was “boring.”

We went sledding outside afterwards, with Livi and D eating snow all the way after the huge storm we had the day before. We also saw lots of animal footprints outside in the woods – rabbit, squirrel, bird, and deer!

Tree Trimming

Livi and D were great helpers outside as we trimmed back a tree that made it hard for the dogs to walk to the path back in the woods.

There are so many fun anecdotes that happen when they’re together, I’m going to really try to stay on top of this blog better. Anyway, here’s of pic of them doing some great teamwork.

Florida

We had a fabulous visit to Sunny Isles Beach, FL to visit great-grandma Chandler! Grandma Chase, Uncle George, cousin Kai, and our family all arranged to be there at the same time and had lots of fun. As you can see from the photos, the weather was perfect, the kids got along great, and we enjoyed great-grandma’s and grandma’s yummy cooking!

We made lots of fairy sandcastles!

Quinn *loved* the beach! She crawled all over the place on the sand, picked up shells, and liked watching the seagulls and the people playing in the water. She was nuts about the pool, too – couldn’t get her out!

Together Time

Sal (“Papa”) made a beautiful bench for our entryway, it’s just gorgeous! Come on over, try it out, and see it for yourselves! Awesome.

Here are the kids in an overeager hug for the bench photo.

Declan and Quinn snuggled up to venture down the driveway and get the mail after the latest snow deluge. (By the way, I would like to say to my Mom and Dad, *I’M REALLY SORRY* for the times you pulled me/us in the sled and I said “Faster, run, run!” What goes around DEFINITELY comes around…..) ; )

We took a walk with Heather last weekend in the woods out back, and she snapped this neat shot of us heading back home together. We spend lots of time back there following deer and other footprints in the snow, listening to the birds, making fairy houses, and sledding down the hills.

Snow!

So much good stuff going on, I’m trying to catch up with some pix for you…….

Enjoy!

Many of you have asked about how long Quinny’s hair is these days. You can get a sense of the length from this picture, she loves combing it every morning.

Snowman Soup

Declan and Livi went straight to work on decorating some mugs and we used them during snack time for our “Snowman Soup.” We received packets of Snowman Soup at a recent birthday party – here’s what they say:
“When it’s so cold
that you holler and whoop,
it’s time to bring out
the Snowman Soup!
Pour the packet in a mug.
Add the snowballs too.
And throw in the kisses
from the snowman to you.
Now fill with hot water
and use the stick to stir it.
Sip slowly and soon
you’ll feel the warm winter spirit!”

“We’ve got cruising…….”

As Mike called to me from the living room the other day, “Honey, we’ve got cruising…..” Quinny is more and more mobile, holding onto stuff and pulling herself along to walk. Declan was already walking when he was her age, but we are in no rush for her to be ambulatory with our upcoming trip on the plane to visit great-grandma in Florida. She is eating table food with increasing zeal, as opposed to just tasting it and playing with it, and she still doesn’t seem to be too phased by all of her teeth coming in. She continues to sleep peacefully from about 8pm to 8am, along with one or two hour-long naps during the day. From the moment she wakes up, she’s on the hunt for big brother Declan! He always wakes up after her, and she’s so excited when she hears his voice coming from the bedroom.

Declan had his first clay class this week and absolutely loved it! He made two pinch pots very quickly, and then he spent the rest of his time making a motorcycle ramp like some of the older kids sitting next to him. I thought up a brilliant idea for car rides, long and short. Before we left for clay class, I told Declan I needed his help to find it, and I drew a Dora-The-Explorer style “map” with three features on it we would be encountering on the way: a covered bridge, a metal bridge, and a stop light. He was so excited to find each item, even the one I screwed up since I’ve only lived here for 20 years and I forgot you can’t see the covered bridge from the road we were on. He felt involved as a “navigator” and we had lots of fun following our map.

Last night, Declan was asking me a question, and I just couldn’t understand all of the words he was saying, or the concept he was trying to convey. So he stopped, looked at me, and said, “I know it’s confusing….” then asked again. Cracked me up!

Potato Prints

Today, Livi did potato prints and had a great time stamping, then used the brush to just paint with, which ended up morphing all of her shapes of trees, 3’s, stars, and birds into swirls of connected colors, which she said she liked better. Very cute. Declan slept through that activity and they free-played together when he woke up.

For the first hour together, Declan was vigilant about telling Livi that “You can’t push Quinny….she’s still a baby…..she doesn’t understand…..” and “Don’t throw the book at her, you can’t do that….” (she wasn’t doing any of these things, but he was the enforcer – can you tell he’s been told these things (once? twice? a million times?) before?

Both kids were excited to make ginger cookies, and they were especially excited to eat the batter (eggless recipe!). They demolished Livi’s brownies she brought over that she’d made at home, along with some cocoa (L) and warm milk (D), then they lost interest in eating the baked finished product. Quinn, however, seems to love the cookies and keeps sneaking some from their snack table. (Recipe at end.)

At one point, Livi responded to something Declan had said, replying, “Don’t talk to me that way!” (don’t know what D said). He got upset and shoved a rolling cube over her way. It grazed her chin and she started crying. I was perched in the doorway, watching all of this unfold while helping Quinny manage a ginger cookie, but I didn’t say anything. Livi cried louder and stared at me, I continued watching but didn’t react. She then walked over to me and cried at me with enormous effort, and I said, “Tell Declan what you need, now.”

She walked over to him very assertively and said “You need to say you’re sorry.” Declan looked visibly uncomfortable and looked down at the ground, looked away, looked basically anywhere Livi wasn’t. Then he walked away and went over to another cube, pushing it randomly at a chair. Livi marched over to him again, hands on hips, exclaiming, “You need to say you’re sorry!” Declan said, “I just have to push this cube, first….” then walked away again. Then he mumbled something, and Livi said, “You have to look at me when you say it.” A little while later, he did what she asked, and all was well, “Diego” and “Alicia” were a team again, combatting the numerous monsters they seem encounter in our living room. It was amazing to watch the whole thing unfold, just working it out between them, by themselves.

Later, we sang a few songs together, with Livi on guitar and Declan on finger cymbals, Quinn on whatever “tasted good” at the time. The favorite was a song Livi brought to our attention by singing it while she worked on a craft one day, “Peace Like A River,” so we sang that together a few times. Mom, those “Wee Sing” books you gave us are absolutely indispensable!! We use them almost every single day!!

C-o-l-d Cape May

Erica and the kids had lots of fun visiting Gemma and Papa at their Cape May home this week, despite the cold! We took in an enjoyable story hour at the local library, had a good time bird-watching and playing at the Nature Center, spent time at beautiful Sunset Beach and the souvenir shop, and ate lots of delicious seafood.
